Trader Joes is a most welcome addition to the new group of stores near the Union Square Park on East 14th Street between 3rd & 2nd Avenues. If you’re not familiar with this chain, you may be put off by a line that forms at the far rear of the store that winds its way to one of the many check-out counters, but it moves quickly and is worth the few minutes of waiting time.
The prices can’t be beat and since they carry their own lines and products, you won’t necessarily recognize the brands from typical supermarkets. This is more than an ordinary shop, it’s an experience. Don’t be afraid to try something new, whether it’s their prize-winning $.99 box of spaghetti, the canned corn or the chocolate crisps. Prices are surprisingly low, and it’s the place to bring home surprises. This is impulse shopping at its best, less about getting staples and paper products, than coming home with novelty food items, either fresh or from the many frozen food counters.
Using a separate entrance, you can browse through their vast wine selection, a favorite among those looking for extraordinary cheap, but good, bottles.
Trader Joes is a favorite among those in the know who want quality and boutique food at discount prices. Enjoy it for its quirkiness and you’ll certainly come back, perhaps including a stop at the nearby Farmers Market in Union Square.
