Matted LIC - 46-36 Vernon Blvd

Matted LIC

Matted LIC is not your average framing store.  Surely there are custom framing options with the expertise of Donna Drimer, owner and a certified professional framer but Matted LIC also features a gallery to furnish the home. From giftware to handcrafted jewelry, here you can pick up artwork from a local artist.

When I visited I was greeted at the door by Donna’s dog, Molly, the very friendly boxer. There was this man looking at the paintings on the wall, so I start looking at paintings too and he introduced himself as Jim, and pointed to the paintings, “there’s the Fuller building, and the Chrysler building, the crown of the Statue of Liberty.” He turns around, points up and continues “this one’s lithography, this one silkscreen.” With passion in his voice and in his eyes, he loved the buildings, he loved architecture. He didn’t stay for long, he introduced himself and had to leave. This most coincidental meeting was with J.K. Sundkist, the artist himself. His works can be found in major public and private collections: The Smithsonian, The Metropolitan, Brooklyn Museum and The White House. Jim is one of the featured artists at Matted LIC this month.

Donna sees Long Island City as an area with great potential for growth, with an “artsy hip feel reminiscent of a young Williamsburg, and just primed to explode.” She encourages an environment for local artist growth by sponsoring events that promote art and poetry. Matted LIC showcases a local LIC artist in their space five times a year. Matted also hosts a open mic poetry series in collaboration with the Queens library. Dates for social events and store promotions are announced on the Matted LIC Facebook.
