When I tell people that I would dump a boyfriend before I moved and changed gyms, I am fairly certain they think I’m kidding – I’m not. And if you belonged to my gym, you’d probably agree with me.
Reebok Sports Club/NY is nicely situated just a few blocks down from my apartment on Columbus Ave at 67th Street. From the outside, it doesn’t even look like a gym. In fact, it looks more like an office building.
When you step into the first floor lobby, there is basically enough space to allow for the weekend crowds to pile in and wait for the two elevators to take you up to the club level. Once there, however, you’ll find plenty of space, equipment and activities for even the biggest fitness fanatics.
Now I didn’t go into Reebok expecting to join the club, but I was curious as to just how nice it could be – and it more than delivered. With four floors of machines and stations, basketball courts, a swimming pool, spin studio and rock climbing wall, this gym has it all.
But it doesn’t stop there. Two features really set this gym apart from other high-end gyms in the city – the yoga studio and rooftop terrace. The yoga studio is far and away the best in-gym yoga studio I have ever seen. The developers were smart in situating the studio in the back of the club on the entry level for two reasons. One, they were able to create an intimate feel so it actually feels like a studio (with it’s own entrance) as compared to a room in the middle of cardio equipment. Two, it’s shockingly quiet – which I definitely appreciate when I am trying to unwind – so there is competition with the spin studio’s techno jams.
The second outstanding feature is the rooftop terrace. While only six-stories up, the view is not spectacular, but in the summer they serve food and beverages from the café – so it’s a nice little oasis in the city.
I can say I come here right when they open at 5am, after work around 6pm, and pretty much every time of day on the weekends, and it is never what I would think of as ‘crowded’ – which is great.
So if you are looking for a great gym on the Upper West Side, Reebok IMO is the clear choice.
Oh, and if you join, check out Akin’s POW! class on Saturday mornings for a great/different workout.
