PS 6 is one of the most sought after public elementary schools on the Upper East Side.  Due to its outstanding reputation, parents often plan to move to the Upper East Side before their kids enter elementary school so as to ensure a chance to be part of this renowned NYC school.  Overcrowding is a problem for many NYC public schools, but the issue has been recognized as particularly acute in District 2 schools due to the closing of P151 five years ago.  Over 120 children that lived in the “PS 151″ zone found themselves without a zoned school in Yorkville.  As a result, schools like PS 6 have been proposed to relieve overcrowding through rezoning.  PS 6 has been actively fighting the rezoning and even if a new PS 151 were to open the threat of a new rezoning plan is always possible.  If you are looking to send your children to PS 6 and you are currently not zoned for it, make sure you know the exact boundaries and get up to speed with all the updated news.  You will have the support of a knowledgeable agent which is always a plus and can help you to make the process stress free.  On a lighter note, let’s not forget that PS 6 has had many famous alumni, from Lenny Kravitz, William Hurt, Chevy Chase, Richard Avedon, as well as Peter Cincotti and JD Salinger just to name a few.

After eight years of absence the school is finally back!  Even though it carries the same name, it bears no resemblance to the previous one that actually closed for poor performance.

This school is brand new, starting from its Principal, a former assistant principal at PS/IS 217 and it is a very welcomed addition to the overcrowded Upper East Side Public School.  The school opened with four kindergarten classes and it will add a grade per year.  Both teachers’ and parents’ involvement are very high and very promising for making this school successful.

Physical Education is provided by Asphalt Green, a sport recreational center, music instruction and concerts are provided to student through a partnership with 92nd street Y and chess is sponsored by NYC chess.  Arts Connection sponsor arts.

America Reads & America Writes tutor visit the school daily to read with students.

This school is located on East 66th Street; therefore one-third of the parents are medical professionals or research scientist working with the nearby Hospitals and Rockefeller University.

Teachers are eager to improve their teaching techniques and may opt to videotape themselves and then watch the recording with the school principal as a self assessment tool.

Both reading and math scores are very high and children who scored “near perfect on state exam test” are given the opportunity to be further challenged by attending morning math sessions suited for their math level.

Children attending this school are encouraged to find out on their own, the solutions to problem, to choose their own books, and correct each others’ spelling mistakes.  Teachers attempt to accommodate children’s quirks as a result a very cooperative and calm atmosphere is felt through out the different classes.

The school has high test scores, a very active PTA and teachers are willing to help kids who needs it.

As a matter of fact, children who need extra help are invited to come to school on Saturdays to prepare for the standardized city and state exams.

This school opened in September 2010 is off to a promising start and the Principal has been teaching at PS6 for a decade.

Designed to relieve overcrowding in other schools on the Upper East Side, it is temporarily located at PS 158.

PS267 plans to move to its permanent site in the Fall 2010 in the former Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital at 213 East 63rd Street.

The school will feature five renovated floors and a rooftop gym and auditorium.
