100 Eleventh Avenue is one of the most exciting NY contemporary projects to date – designed by Jean Nouvel and Beyer Blinder Belle. This dramatic 21-story residential tower features the most highly-engineered and technologically advanced curtain wall ever constructed in New York City. This instant landmark building features a gently curving, glittering mosaic of nearly 1,700 different-sized panes of colorless glass, each set at a unique angle and torque, sheathing one of the most meticulously customized, high performance residential addresses in the nation.

The south curtain wall comprises of approximately 1,647 completely different colorless window panes that are organized within enormous steel-framed megapanels, ranging from 11 to 16 feet tall and 37 feet wide. Each windowpane inside these mega panels is titled at a different angle and in a different direction – up, down, in, out – bearing a slightly different degree of transparency.

The building have a seven-story street wall of mullioned glass 15 feet from the building’s façade to reflect fleeting images of life beyond the building while creating a semi-enclosed atrium unprecedented in New York City and within the atrium, suspended gardens of ornamental vegetation and trees will appear to float in mid-air; private indoor and outdoor terraces will extend from residences; and an open-air dining patio for the lobby restaurant.

On the north and east facades of the building, the building is finished with black brick clad which represents the West Chelsea’s industrial architecture boasting windows of different sizes. The north façade expresses motion within: Elevator shafts will contain random LED lighting and full-scale punched windows, so that passengers in glass-walled cabs see city vistas.

The building has have a 24-hour doorman, a daytime concierge and 24-hour off-site concierge service, a lobby restaurant, a garden, an ATM, a private screening room, storage rooms, a 70-foot-long swimming pool and a gym. Ceiling heights range from 10 feet 1 inch to 11 feet 1.5 inches and the penthouse ceilings range from 12 to 16 feet.

The concept of the design was is inspired in part by the renowned stained-glass window cycles of the 13th Century Gothic cathedral of Saint-Chapelle in Paris. With true floor to ceiling windows, some of the residences of this dramatic building offer terraces, balconies, incredibly spacious and architecturally forward – a vision machine as described by Mr. Nouvel.

You can dress like you live in the fashion capital of the world for a lot less than you think.

A recent addition to the boutiques of Chelsea, The Thrifty Hog has arrived to shake things up. Positioned as an upscale resale boutique, the shop has an impressive collection of women’s clothing, along with accessories, shoes, clothing for men and children, home decor and small furnishings. Recent finds include a fun, frothy skirt by Bryon Lars Beauty Mark (a line worn by First Lady Michelle Obama!) for a mere $20.

If unique stock and very reasonable prices don’t already entice, this fashionable newcomer also has ulterior motives. All proceeds go to benefit the not-for-profit organization Hearts of Gold, whose mission is to “foster sustainable change in lifestyle and levels of self-sufficiency for homeless mothers and their children.” The store also provides job-training for the women.

So stop reading and start shopping!

What makes Cafe Crumpy stand out from the crowd is its distinct and carefully curated line of coffees, hailing from El Salvador, Kenya, Panama, Colombia and more. The beans are all roasted by the cafe. Cafe Grumpy treats its coffee like wine, providing full flavor profiles. Not a fan of the bean? Be enticed by the tea selection with intriguing flavors like French Lemon Ginger. To go with your beverage, they also have a fine assortment baked treats.

Grump’s also has a focus on spreading the knowledge through their coffee-making classes. Current offerings include “Home Brewing for the Coffee Enthusiast” and “Milk Steaming & Latte Art.”

Ace Hotel and Stumptown Coffee

Whether you’re seeking refuge from those city streets or looking for a decent place to spend the night, the Ace Hotel will stop you in your tracks. A diamond in the rough of NYC’s newest hip neighborhood “NoMad,” Ace is a designer’s dream. The lobby is sufficiently dark and moody with a touch of glam achieved through an eclectic furniture collection and the carved plaster ceiling. Originally built in 1904, the design team of Roman & Williams gave the space this magnificent facelift and also designed the hotel’s restaurant, Breslin, and the jewel in the crown: a branch of Portland’s Stumptown Coffee.

There are certain coffee shops that proclaim the Holy Gospel of coffee—where technique and skill meet fresh grinds and properly maintained equipment, where milky hearts in dark brown liquid meet a smiling cashier and a dollar in the tip jar. The newest spot to add to the roster: Stumptown’s first official outpost on the East Coast, within the confines of the Ace Hotel at 29th and Broadway in Manhattan. This isn’t a third Cafe Pedlar operation—even though the staff proudly serves the Frankies’ baked goods—but an actual Stumptown Coffee Roasters location, boasting beans roasted six miles away in the newly opened Stumptown roasting facility in Red Hook.

Mixing the historic with hip, the lobby offers free wireless internet connection, which you can cozy up with on one of the cushy couches. For those who say that NYC is only for the rich, Ace flaunts and tempts with their wealth of competitively priced room options, ranging from a bunk-bed two-fer to a gorgeous loft ripe for entertaining…actually, I just might rent one for a party this weekend!

There are garage sales and then there are garage sales.

If you know the antique scene in Chelsea, you know about the Garage. But even if you’re not a scavenger by trade, a trip to the Garage is a quintessential New York experience.

This unique NYC fixture is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30AM-5PM. Go with coffee in hand and preferably with a good meal in your stomach - it’s best to be prepared when you shop! More than one hundred vendors spread their wares throughout two floors, giving you plenty to parse over. From clothing to housewares to art to furniture to memorabilia, this market is unparalleled.

Go early, bring cash and an eye for diamonds-in-the-rough and you could be going home with a statement piece!

(And, if you’re hungry for more, just one block over between 6th and Broadway is a parking lot that’s transformed into an antiques bazaar on the weekends - the best of both worlds!!)

Decked out with multicolored fluorescent lights set into the walls and giant television monitors in the lobby, this is one of Manhattan’s most cutting edge buildings. Fittingly, The Ohm is located in arm’s length of many of the city’s most popular nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. Playing up the hot spot, vibrant feel of the luxury rental, concerts and other posh events are regularly staged in The Ohm’s sprawling lobby.

The Highline was built in the 1930’s as part of the massive infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. Tenth Avenue had developed a reputation as Death Alley because of the monumental amount of traffic it attracted and the consequent fatalities. Freight trains mingled with street level traffic. Public safety required that men on horses known as West Side Cowboys, ride in front of trains waving red flags. The Highline solved this problem by hoisting fright traffic thirty feet in the air.
Originally running thirteen miles between 34th Street and Spring Street, it’s track avoided the avenues, instead passing through the center of the blocks. In this way it allowed for direct deliveries to factories and warehouses. The last train ran down the Highline just before Thanksgiving in 1980. Three box cars hauled frozen turkeys destined for holiday dinners.
West Chelsea is now part of a new dynamic shunt from businesses, developers and government alike, to re-invigorate a stagnant industrial neighborhood along the western frontier of our great city. What used to be a blight, an eyesore, has become a monument to the past. It seems the more things change, the more they seem to stay the same!
The Highline survived intense lobbying for it’s demolition during the 80’s, however, to become the landmark that it is today. Supporters organised in 1999 to form Friends of the Highline, advocating it reuse as a public space. Through their efforts it gained City support and in 2003 public proposals for it’s imminent rebirth were received from 720 teams and thirty six different countries.View Competition Entries
Construction began on Section 1 in April of 2006, with landscaping following in 2008. View construction photos. The park is opened to the public in June of 2009, with further sections to follow.
